Kisa Powell

To fully understand why I’m so passionate about deaf community here’s a little background about me. I grew up in the deaf community with deaf parents. American Sign Language (A.S.L.) is my first language and I have been a fierce advocate for both my parents and the deaf community. C.O.D.A. means a child of a deaf adult. My passion, outside of hair, is for deaf culture and trying to incorporate it into the hearing world.

We take our hair appointments for granted, growing up both of my parents never had a stylist that explained how to do their hair, especially curly hair, so they have been struggling with their hair ever since I could remember, which translated into our childhood of really bad tangles, haircuts, and traumatizing curly cuts. Growing up I was always trying to find a solution to tame my families curls which lead to a passion for curly and natural hair.

Growing up in a diverse community, as the minority, I was exposed to curly and natural hair early on. On the playground as a child I was playing with everyones hair which evolved in me enrolling in cosmetology school my junior and senior years of high school.

I graduated from Erwin High School in 2008 and received my cosmetology license in 2009. I enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard in 2010 and worked at Supercuts full-time. In 2012, I was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan and provided haircuts for everyone in our unit. Even when I was deployed I was still passionate about making my female soldiers feel beautiful and helping them along their hair journey.

Upon returning I refocused on my passion of cosmetology and began spearheading a deaf friendly salon culture.

My professional goal is to be well educated in cutting, styling, and color techniques so that deaf and hearing clients alike can manifest their inner and outer beauty for the whole world to see.
